Shockwaves NME Awards Tour 2010
This year's high flyers get around
Review
Ah, the NME. Most respected of music journals. Their awards stand as some of the few that musicians still covet, so it was with great pleasure that we bumbled up to Manchester to see the excellent bands they had managed to gather for the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour 2010.
Regrettably, because we are very busy and important we managed to miss The Drums, who kicked off the night. But we can inform you that they are well worth finding on myspace - we like their sound a lot and look forward to seeing more of them this year.
The Big Pink were the first to tickle our aural tastebuds, whose single Dominos was probably stuck in your head for a month or two without you even knowing its name thanks to a frequently played XBox advert. They're a lot noisier than we expected - their other tracks are big, angry electro-rock numbers. The kind that you crave at 1am on Saturday night at Glastonbury.
Surprise hit of the night were Bombay Bicycle Club who exceeded high expectations with a fun yet remarkably polished performance. Clearly very talented boys. The only sad aspect to their music is that even though we knew more songs than we'd realised, none of them get stuck in your head. Which is annoying, because they're really good, so you want them to.
The Maccabees were predictably brilliant. Not outrageously good with getting the crowd going but most enjoyable nonetheless, and with the opposite factors to Bombay Bicycle Club - fewer songs that you recognise but those you do will have you singing their choruses all night long.
Naturally we wish them all the best of luck with their respective nominations, but we doubt it will matter to them that much. With all the publicity from the nominations they'll each be rocketing towards bigger and better things in the blink of an eye.
