Make new friends in Sheffield

Aaah the sweet siren of Sheffield.

It maybe a common phrase that you'll hear almost everywhere; from shop assistants to bus drivers, and it's great to be welcomed by such a friendly greeting in a new city, especially when you know nobody from Adam.

However a friendly smile won't watch reruns of 24 with you, so you may need a little help when moving to the bright lights and big hills of fair old Sheffield. Fear not, Itchy has all you need to make you the talk of the town and have more followers than the Pied Piper (rats optional).

Forget trying to meet new people in clubs; darkened rooms and loud music do not equal a substantial relationship. Instead head to a pub, it's the new after-school club. Bungalows and Bears (Division St, 0114 279 2901) has its very own knitting circle and The Lescar (Sharrow Vale Road, 0114 268 8051) has regular poetry reading nights.

Do you think you can give Bob Dylan a run for his money? Can you whip out a Bohemian Rhapsody before Brian May can even take out his curlers? Then why not join a Songwriters' circle (Burton Street Bar, Hillsborough, Wednesdays from 7pm) and show off your stuff.

Sheffield has probably the country's greatest International swimming pool at Pond's Forge (Sheaf St, 0114 223 3400). If sports are your thing then try a class like Pilates, trampolining or maybe diving. You're sure to meet some like minding folk who look good in a leotard.

Fancy yourself as a bit of a film buff? The home of independent cinema in Sheffield, Showroom (Paternoster Row, 0114 275 7727) holds film courses in conjunction with Sheffield Hallam University where you can brush up on everything from mise en scene to the works of Fellini.
