New to Sheffield

Congratulations, you've made a great choice. You've picked the greatest city of them all.

Don't believe us? Follow our step by step guide for newbies to Sheffield and you'll see what we mean in no time:

The Accent

Dwellers south of Watford may think all northerners sound the same, but think again. Known as Dee-Dars to those in Doncaster, Sheffielder's have a quaint accent you'll come to love. Some phrases to help you blend in: 'Ey Up!' (Hello), '9 while 5'(9 to 5), 'cross overt' road' (cross over the road).

Local Hotspots

Wander down Division St and Devonshire St and watch the fashionistas at work. With plenty of quirky shops like Alice Takes A Trip (The Forum, 126 – 127 Devonshire St), unique bars like The Old House (113 – 117 Devonshire St), and a newly reshaped Green to lounge about on, it must be the coolest place in Shef. You may here locals talk of the hole in the road or Cole's Corner but you'll have to ring Doc Brown and his Delorean to actually find them.

Tips and Tricks

Head to Castlegate market (Castlegate) and pick up your fresh fruit, veg and meat for knock down prices like the locals. Even Jarvis Cocker used to work on the fish stall. Oxfam (531 Ecclesall Rd) bags all the goodies leftover from students and the wealthy so you're sure to bag a bargain.

Hidden Treasures

The greenest city in Europe has some splendid parks for summer strolls and winter walks. Weston Park (Western Bank, Broomhill) has five hectares of land and a brilliant free museum. Brand new Mexican bar and restaurant Abuelo (543 Ecclesall Road) makes amazing fajitas right in front of you for only £4.99 with a free soft drink. Two Steps (249 Sharrow Vale Road) is the best fish and chip shop in the city and the oldest. Grab a butty with extra Hendersons Relish, a local speciality sauce.
