The Lion's Lair
Sheffield's been waiting for somewhere like this for a while now. Converted from former rock pub, The Yorkshireman's Arms, the only heavy metal you'll encounter here is the cutlery from their rather swish restaurant. Serving up accomplished brasserie food complemented by a strong wine list in distinguished surroundings, it's a fine stop off for a shopping break, pre–theatre, business lunch, or an evening out. There's also a tranquil outside garden, with outdoor heaters making alfresco wining and dining palatable even in winter months. Or for the faint hearted, grab a seat in one of their ox–blood leather booths besides a roaring fire. Fine food in relaxed surroundings the Lair has it just right, and makes you wish that Sheffield had more places like this, but then again if it did, you might not appreciate this treasure as much as it deserves. buy the Sheffield city guide here
